Turning Weaknesses Into Strengths

We all have our own personal weaknesses. For some of us, these weaknesses are caused by the lack of a skill or certain knowledge. Not knowing how to drive a car or being a bad cook, are certainly weaknesses. Other weaknesses come down to our personalities. Some people are shy, overconfident or temperamental. Weaknesses can also be in the form of physical or mental handicaps such as a learning disability or being restricted to a wheelchair. Some of our weaknesses are obvious to others and some of our weaknesses can be kept hidden from plain view. Weaknesses can be minor inconveniences easily avoided in daily life or they can be major obstructions requiring us to reorganise our lives to compensate for them.

We all have weaknesses and we try to work on eliminating them, changing ourselves in order to become better. But change is difficult. What if instead of trying to eliminate our weaknesses, we embraced them for what they were? The idea here is simple: Instead of trying to change your weaknesses, accept them. Don't try to fix them - it's too difficult. Instead, be sure to leverage your associated strengths. You can look for colleagues, direct reports, and even supervisors to fill in the gaps where you are weakest. Don't be afraid to ask people for help — they can add value where you are at the weakest. However, be sure to embrace your strengths, and build upon them. After all, your strengths (even those disguised as weaknesses), will get you far in your career, and in life.
