Writing is an important skill in business because
it communicates to others our competence, especially to customers and
competitors. Just as good grooming and dressing well communicates a
professional individual, businesses’ writing skills communicate the same too.
Companies “dress” themselves well in the form of eloquent and professional
writing – though this can also depend on the nature of their business. Take for
example the banking industry and the entertainment industry which are two
entirely unique businesses. Hence, the communication and writing style of these
two industries will vary greatly. While the banking industry portrays a more
serious and professional setting, the entertainment industry on the other hand takes
on a more creative setting. Thus, depending on the nature of business, we must
ensure our writing style is reflective of the industry we work in. In order to
do this, we must be able to identify and distinguish the various type of
communication and writing style.
Apart from the above, our writing skills are also
important in the workplace. We send plenty of emails and messages to our bosses
and colleagues on a daily basis. We write-up memos and create standard
operating procedures. A simple silly mistake could be costly to the company. It
is no wonder that most employers today seek potential employees with good
reading and writing skills – because they are very much valued in the workplace
and because it eases communication in the workplace.
